5. Alan Wake

A psychological, survival-horror title, Alan Wake is being developed by Remedy, the same folks who created Max Payne. Years in development, it is finally about to see the light of day, and it promises an exciting exploration of the troubled mind of a writer who has a massive case of writer’s block.

Thriller writer Alan Wake moves to the small town of Bright Falls, Washington to hopefully find peace and begin writing again. But when his wife disappears and he finds pages from a book he authored but has no recollection of writing, things get dark in a hurry. The creatures from his book begin coming to life, haunting him wherever he goes in his hunt to find his wife, and his only hope in getting her back is finding the missing pages of the book before it’s too late.

The story of Alan Wake offers a deeply disturbing experience that may or may not really be about the demons inside one’s head. Developed by a studio with an impressive pedigree and featuring day/night cycles, an open world, and terrifying action, Alan Wake is shaping up to be immensely satisfying, horrifying, and fun. Alan Wake is scheduled for release in May, 2010. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will make its release date since it’s been pushed back numerous times before.

Featuring a dark storyline, a large, beautiful world to explore, and the development team behind Max Payne, Alan Wake is a no-brainer for number five on our list after such a long wait.
