Perform a new installation of the system software

This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

  • Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB flash drive
    * There must be 400 MB of free space.

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
Using a computer, create a folder named “PS4”. Inside that folder, create another folder named “UPDATE”.
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the “UPDATE” folder you created in step 1.
Save the file with the file name “PS4UPDATE.PUP”.
    • Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds.
The PS4™ system starts in safe mode
    • Select [Update System Software].

A few things to note, for those that own the PS Vita, it will work almost like a second screen for the PS4 with all games being remote playable at launch, both while on a LAN and over the Internet. The PS4 Eye is sold separately but can be pre-ordered as well.

As part of Sony’s PS4 announcement conference on 6/12/2013, the company detailed how on-demand game streaming will work with the new console. That technology is also how backward compatibilty will function on the PS4.

The bad news is that PS3 games will not be natively supported on the PS4. However, through the use of Sony’s cloud based gaming service Gaikai, Sony is working on getting every PlayStation game–PSOne, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3–to be playable on the PlayStation 4.

The PS4 is region free and has an upgradeable 500GB HD according to  yosp on twitter

TrueRemotePlay

PlayStation Plus subscribers will be pleased to know that their subscription includes the PS4 and new PS4 games will be added to the Instant Game Collection at launch. If you’re not a PS+ subscriber, you may want to step up and subscribe since online play will require a subscription. It has been revealed that PS+ is not required in order to access internet apps like Netflix, HULU or others. Smart move Sony, smart move.
