2009 VGA Award Nominations Announced

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Emerges As Early Favorite

Today, Spike TV announced the 2009 VGA Award Nominees. Leading the list of nominees is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, with 8 nominations. Also pulling numerous nominations are Batman: Arkham Asylum with seven nominations and roping in six nominations each, Left4Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

While the leading candidates are excellent titles, there is still plenty that video gamers are finding to debate about. Among the notable (and already hotly debated) nominations made by Spike:

  • In the Best Xbox 360 Game category, Batman: Arkham Asylum, a non-exclusive title, was nominated.

  • In the Best PC Game category, three non-exclusive titles were nominated – Dragon Age: Origins, Left4Dead 2, and Plants vs. Zombies.

  • The inclusion of Wii Sports Resort as an “Individual Sports Game” nominee.

  • The nomination of Megan Fox for Best Peformance By A Human Female for her performance in Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen and the lack of a nomination for Claudia Black, who played the role of Chloe Frazer in Uncharted 2 and Morrigan in Dragon Age: Origins.

  • The lack of a nomination for Nathan Fillion, who played Drake in Uncharted 2, in the Best Performance by a Human Male category.

  • The omission of Left4Dead 2 and Uncharted 2 in the Best Cast category.

The VGA Awards kick off the video game award season in grand fashion with a televised ceremony on Spike TV. Because of the exposure of the VGA Awards, there is always debate about the legitimacy of the awards because they are seen by some gamers as pushing for ratings by nominating games that are well-known by the general public but that weren’t altogether critically acclaimed and, in particular, by nominating big name actors to the “Best Performance by a Human” categories.

Any list of awards is sure to warrant discussion and debate over the choices made by the voting panels, and passionate gamers will come out to decry the lack of nominations for their favorite games. The awards season is upon us, and the debates are just now picking up.

After taking a look over the list of nominees, what are your thoughts?
