BioShock 2 Leads February Sales

BioShock 2 just barely squeezed out a win over New Super Mario Bros. Wii in February, selling nearly 7,000 units more than the popular Mario title in a slow sales month for the industry.

BioShock 2‘s Xbox 360 version piled up 562,900 sales according to the NPD, while New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 555,600 copies. Most astounding, however, is Modern Warfare 2‘s continued dominance of the market. While the Xbox 360 version of the game finished third overall in February with 314,300 sales, the PlayStation3 version added another 252,800, which, when combined, totaled 567,100 copies sold three months after its release.

Other notable figures include Heavy Rain, which clocked in with 219,300 sales on the PlayStation 3 despite releasing late in the month, and Mass Effect 2, which sold 246,500 copies on the Xbox 360 (NPD figures do not include PC sales).

The month comes across as a mixed success for 2K Games. While the Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 sold a very strong 562,900 copies, the PlayStation 3 version of the game didn’t even register on the NPD charts.

Overall, U.S. consumers spent $624.4 million on vieo games in February, which is down 18 percent from February 2009.
