Ryan Kesler Named Cover Athlete For NHL 2K11

Vancouver Canucks forward and U.S. Olympian Ryan Kesler will grace the cover of NHL 2K11, which will be coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii later this year.

Kesler joins the likes of NHL superstars Alexander Ovechkin, Rick Nash, Joe Thornton and my personal favorite, Martin St. Louis, all of whom have been previous cover athletes for the long-running hockey franchise.

Speaking to the Canadian Press, Kesler admitted that he was ecstatic about the opportunity. “Everything just keeps getting better for me,” he said. “I”m very excited. It’s a dream come true for me…I grew up playing and to be on the cover 2K is unbelievable.”

Furthermore, Kesler admitted that he never imagined he would be on the cover of a hockey game, saying that the only way he’d thought he’d ever be on the cover would be “if I put my own picture on there.”

Kesler has 19 goals and 40 assists this season with Canucks, a year after being nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive forward in the NHL.

NHL 2K11 will mark the first time that the series is only released for one platform, a move that may be indicative of 2K’s desire to focus on creating a multi-platform sport title that is only released every two years in order to maximize profits and improve upon the quality of the experience. NHL 2K10 was lauded for its arcade play and stunning arena detail, but it was also seen as lacking the options and realism that EA’s NHL series offers gamers.
