Checks in the mail for NCAA student-athletes for likeness rights video game lawsuit settlement, firm seeking W-9 information from class members
NCAA student-athletes whose likenesses were featured in NCAA and EA Sports video games recently received checks from a first-of-its-kind lawsuit that settled for a combined $60 million, according to attorneys at Hagens Berman.
The settlements were reached in 2014, and more than 24,000 student-athletes were found eligible to receive payment under the settlements. The law firm says that checks went out to about 15,000 players between Apr. 7, 2016 and Apr. 8, 2016, some up to $7,600, with a median around $1,100.
Hagens Berman is also in the process of collecting W-9 information for another group of more than 7,000 student-athletes who will receive checks in roughly three weeks, but will have state and federal taxes withheld if they do not send a W-9.
Because of the number of claimants who are receiving more than $600, and who have not already submitted a W-9 form to the settlement administrator, the deadline for W-9 forms has been extended to April 20, 2016.
Claimants who have not already submitted their W-9 information can enter their Claim ID and Access Code to submit a W-9 here. Those who do not have their Claim ID and Access Code may fill out a W-9 without logging in here.
Claimants may also download a Form W-9 from the IRS website, fill it out and email it to [email protected].
