PopCap Says 24% of Consumers Play Social Games

PopCap, makers of Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies reports that more than 24 percent of all consumers play social networking games like Farmville and Mafia Wars. The survey, conducted by PopCap, reached out to more than 5,000 consumers and found that the average player of these social-networking games is a 43-year old woman. Out of the 5,000-plus people surveyed, PopCap found that 1,200 play a social game at least once per week.

According to PopCap, analyst and researcher data projects that there will be over $1 billion in revenue for social games in 2010. The revenue, PopCap found, would come from virtual currency, which is largely used by the gaming population. The survey found that of the 1,200 people who played social games, 53 percent have earned or spent virtual currency in a game.

“While still in its infancy,” said PopCap, “the social games sector represents a huge opportunity to reach hundreds of millions of consumers who historically have not played video games.”

Accordingly, though, there is also a note for hesitation: Only 28 percent have ever spent real money on virtual currency and 32 percent of users have bought a virtual gift.
