Want to know just how many different decisions that you made in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 will determine the storyline and events in Mass Effect 3? How about over 1,000.Speaking with PC Zone, Mass Effect 3 project lead Casey Hudson said that Mass Effect 3 will be impacted by the decisions made in the first two games, and more importantly, that nearly every decision makes a difference, from whether you chose to save or destroy a species to your love life decisions.
“We plan out the larger plot points of the story from one game to the next, but it would be impossible to plan it all in advance,” he said. “More importantly, we’d never be able to plan as many creative opportunities if we’d do it all up front. Instead, we record what a player has done in a play-through, and then we have all of those choices available that writers can refer to as they build storylines.
“Numerically, it’s over 1,000 variables that we’ll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who’ve played the previous games.”
He continued, saying that the game wouldn’t change much in style or presentation from the second title. “In Mass Effect 2 we focused on what we love about RPGs: An awesome sense of exploration, intense combat, a deep and non-linear story that’s affected by your actions, and rich customization of your armor, weapons and appearance.
“We had an overwhelmingly positive response to this approach, and while we’ll make further adjustments to it for Mass Effect 3, we’re really happy with how it’s been received so far.”
This all sounds great to us. Mass Effect 2 was one of those games that comes along every once in a long, long while. It combined cinematic action, a stunning story, and truly evolved gaming by allowing your version of Commander Shepard, the protagonist, to be an individual. Each decision you made in the series so far has had an impact on how others receive you and how you are faring in the battle against the Reapers. Mass Effect 3 may just be our most anticipated game – well, Uncharted 3 is right there, too.
