Nintendo President Confirms New Console

Speaking to shareholders in a private Q&A session on June 29, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that the company is indeed working on a new console. “We are of course studying and developing the next console to the Wii,” said Iwata. “However, there is a big difference between studying a product and announcing what it is and when we will release it.”

The Nintendo executive has stated that he is wary of releasing too much information about the company’s current endeavors, as he is afraid that rival companies Microsoft and Sony will lead to a copying of ideas. “I am afraid to say that the history of entertainment is also the history of imitation. A great idea will promptly be copied unless protected through patents,” he said. “At the same time, it is really important for our business to positively surprise people. Will you be surprised by our completed product if we told you how it is surprising three years in advance?”

This is great news for gamers. It not only shows that the next generation of consoles is on its way, even if it’s only a speck on the horizon, but that Nintendo is still confident that they can find new and interesting ways to surprise the world’s gamers. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what the company has up its sleeve this time around.

The Q&A session was recently released to Nintendo’s website, where it can be read in its entirety.
