Street Fighter and Tekken Universes Collide

Throughout history, two fighting fighting series have stood head and shoulders above the rest. Street Fighter, when it was released back in the 80s, took the world by storm, popularizing a relatively new genre. The game went unrivaled until almost a decade later, when Tekken exploded onto the world scene. Ever since, fans of the two series have been at each others’ throats, locked in a battle to decide which franchise was better. Unfortunately, neither fan base has had the chance to win a clear-cut victory over the other…until now.

Capcom and Namco Bandai executives revealed yesterday that the world’s newest cross-series brawler, Street Fighter X Tekken, is in development for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The announcement was made at Comic-Con by the game’s producer, Yoshinori Ono, and Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada, in front of thousands of fans who couldn’t have been more delighted to hear it.

Street Fighter X Tekken will employ the same technology as Street Fighter IV, meaning that diehard Tekken fans will have to adjust to a 2D playing field. The game will feature completely new maps and characters, as well as some returning favorites from both series. A new game mode, Tag Team, in which players must pick two fighters and pull off assists and two man combos, will also make its debut.

“This is history we’re making,” commented Ono. He continued “Two fighting games that have rivaled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”
