BioWare: No Fix For Small-Text on Standard TV’s in Mass Effect 2

Small Text Issue Will Be Considered For Next BioWare Title

February 6, 2010 – BioWare has said that they will not be fixing an issue in which the text in Mass Effect 2 is difficult to read on standard-definition TV’s.

BioWare’s Michael Gamble wrote on Mass Effect 2‘s forum, saying, “We understand that on some Standard Definition TVs the smallest text in Mass Effect 2 can be difficult to read. While this was not an intentional result, it was a byproduct of enhancements to the user interface.”

“After investigating potential solutions, we have determined that while this issue does affect a small portion of SDTV owners, we are unable to resolve it for Mass Effect 2 through a title update. However, we have taken note of this issue and will take it into consideration as we plan future games in the Mass Effect franchise.”

Mass Effect 2 users began complaining to BioWare after the game’s release on January 26, claiming that the text on screen was nearly impossible to read on Standard Defintiion TV’s. The text issue is one that has affected many High Definition games this generation and was a complaint in Dead Rising, one of the first games to arrive on the Xbox 360. The problem is that on the High Definition TV’s for which the games are designed, the text appears to be normally sized. But, details are less fine and objects on screen are smaller on a Standard Definition TV. As a result, the text that is normally sized on an High Definition TV is very small on a Standard Definition screen.

As someone who only recently converted to an HDTV, I can attest to the frustration of small text on screen. I purchased an Xbox 360 several years ago specifically to play Dead Rising and I remember not being able to read a thing on screen. My High Definition TV today isn’t huge – 21 inch screen – but it makes a world of difference.

Unfortunately for Standard Definition TV owners, games today are being made for High Definition screens because they are beginning to become the majority, particularly in homes with consoles. It’s good to know that BioWare is taking text size into consideration for their next title. Perhaps they can include a “text-size” option? We can only hope.
