Duke Nukem is Back…Maybe

It’s time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of bubblegum. Maybe.

A new Duke Nukem game has been something of an inside joke to anyone familiar with the gaming world. So much so, that the games developers even realize this, and yet they continue to tease Duke’s loyal fans.

According to the official Duke Nukem Facebook page, “Duke Nukem doesn’t stay down for long.” Well, at least that is what the just released screenshot label “D-Day” is begging you to imply.

The screenshot features a character that in no way resembles the classic ladies man Duke Nukem, taking aim at what looks like a gigantic creature you may find in the universe that the game inhabits. Furthermore, the screenshot seems to take place in a stadium of some sort. The screenshot is can only lead to speculation that once again a Duke Nukem game is currently in development. Take this with a grain of salt though, because this would not be the first time that screenshots have leaked, only leading to false hopes and shattered fan boy dreams.

Is that a huge monster? Is that Duke in that suit? Is that a football stadium?

There is no other information given about the screenshot, so as of right now, no one knows for sure where it has come from. It could be an image from the currently on-hold Duke Begins that was being developed by Gearbox Software, creators of Brothers in Arms and Borderlands, or from the now infamous Duke Nukem Forever development from Duke’s original creators, 3D Realms.

Duke Nukem Forever has been in development since 1997, shortly after the release of Duke Nukem 3D, a classic shooter featuring Duke Nukem, a cigar-smoking, muscled wise-cracker who frequents strip joins and porn shops on his quest to free the world from alien invaders. The long development and lack of news regarding its development has led most people to believe that the game will never be released.

Regardless, the new screenshot is sure to fuel expectations that Duke isn’t dead after all. It also affirms that he is still incredibly popular in the gaming world – it’s only a matter of time before someone actually gets a new Duke game out to the public. Could this screenshot be the first signs of a revitalization of the Duke?
