New Swarm Video – Episode 3: How To Score With a Swarmite

Swarm gives players control of 50 utterly fearless Swarmites and drives them through an intense and often suicidal battle of survival. More details, and the video, after the jump.

Swarm is the first game to feature mass character control, where players move all the Swarmites at once.  Steer the flock of pudgy, clueless little blue morons through the game and they naturally flock and flow around obstacles.
Creatively combine swarm moves to work your way through a relentlessly dangerous and hilariously brutal environment.  Compete against friends to get the high score by deftly moving through the world and cleverly solving puzzles the game throws your way.

What is Swarm?
Swarm is an action-platformer where you take control of 50 utterly fearless Swarmites and drive them through an intense, entertaining and often suicidal battle of survival. Run, bash, huddle, boost, stack, jump, push and throw your way through gauntlets of death and destruction to collect valuable DNA and ensure that at least one Swarmite survives.

What was the inspiration behind Swarm?
Swarm is based on an idea we had at Hothead shortly after we started the company in 2006. The unique mechanics in the game are actually based on the artificial life research of Dr. Michael Hayward, Hothead’s Advanced Technology Specialist. We entered an early prototype in a nationwide indie game contest, where it advanced to the final round, garnered a prize of $300,000 and was selected as the People’s Choice in the contest based on votes from the public. Ever since that first prototype, the reaction people have had to the characters and the game play have told us we had something special on our hands. So we’ve worked on it quite a bit since then, honing the concept and iterating on the game play. We’re really happy with the result and know gamers will be too!

What platforms will Swarm be available on?
Swarm will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network.

What is the release date?
Swarm will be released in the Spring of 2011. The exact date has yet to be announced.

What is the world of Swarm like?
Dangerous. The world of Swarm is full of hazards, obstacles, and enemies designed to turn your swarmites into puddles of blue goo. All this death and destruction takes place in a variety of environments with a quirky and unique art style.

Will Swarm have special “boss” fights?
Yes. But that’s all we’re sharing for now!

How long does it take to finish the game?
On average, gamers will be able to complete the main story in 6 to 8 hours. Swarm has a large focus on replayability. Many more hours of play are available while you you battle your friends for supremacy on the leaderboards, kill your swarmites to complete your collection of Death Medals, and earn Achievements and Trophies.

Will there be a demo?

Will there be multiplayer?
Swarm is a single player game, but in classic arcade fashion you will be able to compete with your friends on leaderboards. Your friends’ rankings will be displayed in the game, so you’ll always know where you stand.

Will there be a boxed version?
Nope! At least, there isn’t one in the current plans. Downloadable is the best way for indie developers like Hothead to get unique titles in gamers’ hands in a way that simply isn’t possible with retail games.

What languages and regions will Swarm be available in?
A bunch! We will be simultaneously releasing Swarm in as many regions as we can. The game will be available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese.
