Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Announced, Revealed

EA Play and Warner Bros. announced today that, to coincide with the splitting of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into parts for film, they will do the same with the game franchise.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part 1 will be released this fall for all major platforms (the movie arrives in November) and will take place outside of Hogwarts, as Harry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

As a refresher for those who forget the full story (or as a primer for those who haven’t read it at all), Lord Voldemort split his soul into seven parts so that, even if his body was killed, he could resurrect himself. These parts of his soul, split by killing people, could be harnessed in magical objects, Horcruxes. Harry, Ron, and Hermone have dropped out of Hogwarts in order to search for and find the Horcruxes so that they may destroy them and, in turn, be able to destroy Voldemort for good.

The early screens show Harry hiding behind columns, facing off against Death Eaters. To be honest, it almost looks like a third-person shooter version of Harry Potter, which it very well may be.

“The final Harry Potter adventure has given us the opportunity to make a darker and more action-oriented game than we have before,” said Jonathan Bunney, vice president of production at EA Bright Light.

“We believe we are creating a Harry Potter game that the HD console gaming generation will appreciate and enjoy. We have built new technology specifically to allow us to prove that magic is a truly potent force and, in this game, players will need to use all their skills if they want to survive.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a story that is character-driven in the first half. Harry, Ron, and Hermione camp in the woods, trying to avoid Death Eaters who travel openly now, and try to think of where Voldemort’s Horcruxes could be. So, any game adaptation of Part 1 will have to be wildly inaccurate as compared to the actual book. However, Part 2 of the book is completely action-focused, with Harry, Ron, Hermione and hundreds of others participating in a final showdown with Voldemort at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
