New Super Mario Bros. Wii Tops NPD January Charts

February 12, 2010 New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the best-selling game in the United States in January according to the latest NPD figures. Bolstered by strong reviews, a huge user base for the Wii system and the Mario name, New Super Mario Bros. Wii beat out Mass Effect 2, the newest game from developer BioWare.

While January featured several major releases, including Mass Effect 2, Darksiders, Bayonetta and Army of Two: The 40th Day, none of them were able to top Nintendo’s juggernaut, which has already surpassed ten million total unit sales.

Mass Effect 2 came in at the second spot and was closely followed by Wii Fit Plus. Mass Effect 2 received monumental accolades from across the industry and is considered by many to be an early Game of the Year contender while Wii Fit Plus continues to sell in spades despite having been released way back in October.

Modern Warfare 2 continues to sell solidly also, with the Xbox 360 version coming in 4th in sales and the PlayStation 3 version coming in at number 7.

New January release Army of Two: The 40th Day and Darksiders came in 8th and 10th, respectively, while the critically adored Bayonetta was nowhere to be seen.

The full chart can be seen below and it’s apparent that Just Dance isn’t just a British phenomenon. It’s also on the charts here. I’m not kidding, this needs to stop.
