‘Project Needlemouse’ is Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I

Sega Confirms New Sonic Game Coming This Summer

February 4, 2010 – Sometimes rampant speculation is correct. In an interview with GameSpot, SEGA associate brand manager Ken Balough announced that Sonic is returning to his 2D roots this summer. The title, Sonic The Hedgehog 4, will have 2D graphics and will be available via XBLA, PSN and WiiWare.

The game has recieved the subtitle Episode I because SEGA plans it as the first game in a new story arc picking up after the end of Sonic & Knuckles. Balough told GameSpot, “When Sega released Sonic 3, ultimately it was the part 1 of a story that saw its conclusion in Sonic & Knuckles. In that same spirit, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a bigger story, and this is that first chapter.”

The move to a downloadable format doesn’t mean the end of Sonic’s disc-based adventures. “Sonic as a brand is definitely not moving away from our packaged console versions. Making Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I for download is just a new way to offer a great Sonic experience through a different medium,” said Balough.

I for one am excited to see Sonic returning to his roots after falling from grace over the past few years. You can read the full interview with Balough at Gamespot or visit SEGA’s official site for details.
