Terminal Gamer’s 2009 Awards – Shooter of the Year

Terminal Gamer’s Shooter of the Year Is…

Modern Warfare 2

The fastest-selling game of all time, highly anticipated and both loved and loathed, Modern Warfare 2 is, in the end, a stunning shooter experience. Featuring massive (and often ridiculously over-the-top) set pieces, Modern Warfare 2 was like a blockbuster film that cost hundreds of millions to make and left you feeling exhilarated and breathless.

The story takes place several years after that of Modern Warfare. A Russian terrorist attacks Moscow’s International Airport and kills an American operative working to infiltrate his organization. The body, discovered at the scene of the massive terrorist attack, convinces Russia that the act was conducted by the U.S. In retalation, the Russian’s attack the United States. Fighter jets roar over I-95, paratroopers fall onto roof tops, and firefights take place in suburban neighborhoods, in TGI Friday’s restaurants, and on the National Mall, where the Capitol Building is falling apart and the White House is occupied by Russian troops. The game focuses on the war in America and the attempts to track down the terrorist responsible in Russia. Action packed, hugely entertaining, and featuring fantastic multiplayer elements (albeit needing some patching to stop cheaters), Modern Warfare 2 was this year’s top shooter experience. Hands down.

Runners up: Left 4 Dead 2, Halo 3: ODST

Also ran: Killzone 2, Borderlands

Modern Warfare 2 was action-packed and cinematic in scope.
