This is the first mini that (probably) shouldn’t be called one. In Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, the player takes control of a massively powerful aristocratic demon known only as “The Duke” who is woken up by the sound of his princess being stolen from her heavily barricaded room in his castle. Without a single clue to go on, he can only assume that monsters were (probably) responsible, and sets out to track down his missing princess by beating up monsters largely at random in the hope that it will (somehow) reunite him with his beloved princess.
The game is an upwards-scrolling platformer in which the player must chase down giant fleeing monsters and subdue them by crashing into them three times. As the player touches platforms on the way up they will build up a combo, delighting the Duke and increasing his speed and power to enable him to unleash increasingly over-the-top finishing moves when he defeats the monsters.
Moving upwards quickly is the key, but touching a platform more than once stops your combo and slows you down. Lose your combo too many times, and you’ll never defeat the monster before he reaches the top of the level.
The graphics are top notch and very colorful. The levels are well thought out (albeit vertically only) and can be challenging to not lose that all important combo count.
The story is carried through cut scenes and adds quite a bit of humor along the way. The Duke interrogates the monsters after he takes them down, and the discussions can be entertaining with (possibly) some singing along the way.
It’s hard to believe that this game is actually a mini. Other than the story being short, it could pass as a full game. The levels are well designed, with colorful and artistic background graphics. The storyline is entertaining and the cut scenes will (probably) make you chuckle. Keeping in mind that this is a mini, it goes above and beyond any mini available on the PSN.
