Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Quality That’s Worth Every Penny

We were recently sent a shiny new wireless headset to try out and we have spent the last month testing out the Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset by Audeze. Was it music to our ears?

Read on to find out

Headsets come in all shapes and sizes these days,  and range from wired and inconvenient, to wireless and incompetent. Some allow so much outside noise from their mics that you may end up muting your best buddy just so you don’t have to listen to their two year old whine and cry. Others may have you straining to hear footsteps from a bad guy over the steady hum of a nearby vehicle, while others may have a battery life shorter than Kevin Hart. Finding a great headset can be a chore and may require multiple trips to Best Buy or multiple orders from Amazon until you find that perfect match. We may have just saved you some time.

Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Impressive sound

Powered by Audeze’s latest 90mm planar magnetic drivers, with over 3X the driver area of leading competitors, Maxwell delivers powerful bass and pinpoint precision. The headset delivers incredible sound, with 3D in-game sound that will allow you to pinpoint where a noise is coming from. The size of the magnetic drivers does add a little heft to the headset, but no so much that wearing them will tire you out or cause your neck to get sore. It’s a decent trade off when you hear the quality of the sound coming out of the headset.

The sound canceling ear muffs tend to work a little too well and if you are gaming in a cold room, these will keep your ears nice and toasty. We opted to order some replacement ear pads from Wicked Cushions , WC Freeze MaxwellCooling Gel Replacement Earpads, and that solved our toasty ear problem. We found that while gaming late at night with friends, maybe fighting your way through Nightmare Dungeons in Diablo IV, you may want to make sure you keep your voice down as the noise canceling feature means you can’t even hear yourself speak very well. If you’re a late night gamer in a house full of sleeping people, make sure not to raise your voice when speaking.

Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Insane Battery Life

We received these headset a month ago and charged them for an hour. While they were charging up, we downloaded the Audeze HQ app from the Google Play Store (also available on the Apple App Store) and connected the headset to our Android phone.

The app not only gives you the battery percentage, but can also be used to adjust the sound quality with an equalizer and adjust the time window of the auto-off feature. After a week of using the headset we fully expected the battery to be drained. It was at 80%. Over a month of gaming later and the battery finally dropped below 10%. That is absolutely insane. If you do find yourself running low, the headset has a 20 minute fast charge that will have you back in the game in no time, and ready to go all day again.

Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – No Outside Noise

The headset comes with a boom mic that plugs into the bottom left side, and using AI technology, it filters out all of the outside noise. No need to tell your two year old to keep it down or even worry about a TV in the other room being too loud. These things do an incredible job of filtering out all of the background noise and the only thing your teammates hear coming from you is your voice.

Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Easy Connectivity

The Audeze Maxwell Wireless Headset comes in two flavors. One is designed for the PlayStation and the other is designed for the XBOX. Both versions will work with your mobile phone or PC using either Bluetooth or the USB dongle that ships with it. We used both our phone’s Bluetooth and the dongle on our PS5 to give us access to the app’s audio features on our phone while allowing the headset to be fully used by the PS5. One nice little plus using that set-up, if someone calls our phone, the audio is switched automatically and we can use the headset for that phone call.

Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Conclusion

The Audeze Maxwell Wireless Headset retails for US$299 and while that may seem a bit pricey, these can be used not just for gaming but also for travel, for listening to music around the house, on a plane, train, or subway via your phone or whatever you use for music. The battery life means you’ll never have to worry about them dying during a weeks worth of commuting or even a week long business trip. Charge them up, toss them on your neck, and go anywhere. Only thing missing is a nice carrying case.

HyperX and Astro better take notice, because Audeze has set the bar extremely high!
