Black Ops Poster Explained

It’s no secret that GameStop started giving out a special poster to customers who pre-ordered Call of Duty: Black Ops quite some time ago. If you’re one of those customers, you’ve undoubtedly noticed at least one or two of the odd, inexplicably placed numbers scattered around the back of your poster. There’s been quite a lot of talk about these numbers lately, and even more speculation as to what they might mean. Read on to find out.

In the bottom left-hand corner of the poster, immediately above the ESRB’s “Rating Pending” logo, is a ten digit number, 8773864270 . Many believe this to be a phone number which is meant to be dialed as 1(877)386-4270. After calling this number myself, I sat listening to the “line busy” buzz for a good ten minutes before hanging up. Early on this number was believed to be a code which would grant access to a Black Ops beta sometime in the future, although everybody soon realized that 300,000 people couldn’t use the same code to get into the beta.

In the upper left-hand corner of the poster, slightly to the left of the soldier’s shoulder, is the phrase “One-Seven-One-Two.” The most popular theory regarding this particular number is that it refers to a year during the American Revolutionary period. When you think about it for a second, this idea doesn’t seem all that farfetched. That era was one during which the political scene was extremely tense and the public was a frightened mass, not unlike to way things were during the Cold War.

The number appears vertically at the top of the poster, smack-dab in the middle. If you’re thinking that this looks a lot like an IP address then you’re absolutely right. Upon entering the number into your internet browser’s address bar, you’ll be taken to a GameStop run site which is currently under construction. There’s no word on what this site will hold yet, but you can expect it to be something along the lines of a promotional deal.

The letters SOG can be found slightly down and to the left of the IP address. Most people believe this to stand for “Special Operations Group.”

Just to the left of the IP address you can see the number 483339. This is one of the most mysterious numbers to appear on the poster, as it doesn’t seem to refer to anything at all. A lot of people seem to think that it refers to the pin number for the above mentioned phone number’s voice mail, although this theory doesn’t seem to hold too much water, as the the above mentioned phone number is likely to be a fake.

To the far right of the poster, about three quarters of the way down, is the number 1701. Nobody seems to know what this number means, although the most popular theory is that it refers to the squad number of the game’s protagonists.

There are a few people out there who seem to believe that there is a map running along the edges of the poster, although I was personally never able to find it.

Those are all of the biggest secrets people have been able to find. There are a few other things floating around, like that the engraving on the soldier’s pistol has a deeper meaning than a nickname and kill count, although they have generally been pushed off to the side as insignificant.

In any case, check out the poster for yourself above. If you have any ideas that weren’t mentioned above then we’d love to hear them in the comments section, and be sure to keep your attention here as more information surfaces about the game that’s giving us a new question with every answer.
