A few days ago, the climax of all my aspirations was the new DSi XL that’s arriving shortly here in the U.S. Now I have to set my sights on something greater…and in a different dimension. The true successor to the DS is coming out next year, the 3DS.

According to reports, this handheld from Nintendo will allow users to experience 3D without goofy glasses. Yeah, you know the one’s we’re talking about. Nintendo is following the money, where human interest is in 3D films, TV and now, games.

But many would ask how Nintendo will manage to ditch the glasses. After all, aren’t glasses the only way 3D can work? Not necessarily. CVG.com had a talk with Neil Dodgson, a 3D displays expert based at Cambridge University, and he says that it is possible with ‘lenticular technology’.

This term describes a long lens with a flat back and a curved front that the 3DS most likely will use, saying, “the lenticules direct the pixels’ light in different directions, so each eye sees only every alternate column of pixels. The graphics chip renders two images, one for the left eye and one for the right. These two images are displayed on the two sets of alternating columns of pixels.”

This sounds like it will be hard to pull off in such a small machine, but Nintendo has proven to be the leading innovator in gaming since the company was founded. Something tells me that if 3D is going handheld, it’s quite literally in good hands. Pokemon in 3D anyone?

Nolan is confident that his adaption will be a success. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Nolan expressed his excitement regarding the film-making process, saying, “It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story… we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.”

I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do… We’re trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films. I think David’s approach is a very good way of doing just that.”

Looking at the popularity of Nolan’s Batman films, it seems that Superman may have found a way to beat its recent Hollywood Kryptonite.

So, I’m sitting down for another fascinating adventure through Pokemon platinum, knowing all too well that a Crystal remake is coming. All I need to do is beat the Elite Four and explore the battle frontier and I’m set. But when I turn it on…I get distracted.

You see I have the DSi. At first (like anyone, I think) I was excited about the camera when the DSi came out. I said to myself, “Hey, since I take this everywhere I go, I will have a camera to capture all the funny moments in my life!” At first I loved playing with its cool features…then I realized that I was forgetting why I bought the DSi in the first place. To play my favorite games!

The PSP doesn’t deliver the same numbers of magical adventures that only RPG’s can bring (I know the PSP has a few good RPG titles, but their RPG library should be bigger). Additionally, I was drawn to the DS because of the touch screen feature. I’m all for total immersion in the things I love, and the stylus is a gateway to another world!

So now I’m thinking about all of these extra add ons, and it seems like Nintendo has somewhat moved away from good games. It’s true that Nintendo has been trying to reach a broader audience, and I have to admit the camera was a good idea. But for me, this takes away from the experience a tad bit.

Okay, so back to Pokémon, sort of. It’s too bad I don’t have the option to skip the main menu and dive straight into the game itself. I always get caught up in just taking one more picture, and messing with just one more silly face. I know not to expect Nintendo to feed the hardcore crowd as much as it used to, but can’t I hope for change?

I say Nintendo can please hardcore gamers while still expanding the fan base of the industry. They have done so many revolutionary things that I know that they can think of a way to make games that satisfy both groups, right?

What do you think?

There is nothing like going through the city on a sunny day…while buildings are falling around you and people are trying to kill you that is. Army of Two: The 40th day got gamers hooked with its demo of mass destruction back in December and its full release in January. Now, EA has revealed that DLC is in the game’s near-future.

Army of Two: The 40th day is the sequel to the smash hit Army of Two, available on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Rios and Salem get thrown into more firefights were everything blows up (even more so than in the first game.) The game, which requires that players cooperate to move through missions, has generally been met with praise throughout the games industry and it looks like EA will be rewarding the gamers who purchased and have been plowing through the title with their friends.

The DLC will add two new chapters to the campaign. Called “Chapters of Deceit,” it will follow Salem & Rios as they find intel that could help them end the invasion of Shanghai by The 40th Day. It will consist of two new maps to shoot your way through and will cost 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99 on PSN.

Chapters of Deceit will be available for download on April 1st, so you have a few months to catch up if you haven’t already been playing through Salem & Rios’ latest over-the-top adventure.

Check out screens from the DLC package below.

Back in 2007 gamers around the world were introduced to Altair and the free roaming world of the holy land of 1191 AD in Assassin’s Creed and in 2009, Ubisoft unveiled Assassin’s Creed 2, which won many awards across the industry and was nominated at this year’s DICE awards. but lost out to Uncharted 2, the heavy favorite. But, the DICE awards are the games industries Oscars, and it is a major feat to just be nominated. While strolling the red carpet before the awards ceremony last night, Desilets and May discussed the next adventure in the Assassin’s Creed series, revealing juicy tidbits.

They clarified that the game will indeed feature a multiplayer component and will be accompanied by a significant single-player campaign set in Rome and starring Ezio, the hero of Assassin’s Creed 2. They also stated that the multiplayer will have ‘narrative justification’. It’s good to see that the developers aren’t changing the series completely by including multiplayer and that they are seeking a way to justify its inclusion in the overarching storyline. After all, Assassin’s Creed 2‘s storyline was excellent and was one of the reasons it was nominated at this year’s DICE awards.

The sequel is slated for release in March, 2011…a quick turnaround for this impressive series.
