Topatoi: The Pillar of Skies Adds New Levels and New Features

(For the full storyline, please visit our episode 1 review)

The story mode of Topatoi: Pillar of the Skies consists of 7 new chapters of Raph’s adventures with the final Blackwing’s battle. Also, the add-on brings 10 new arcade levels and features a new co-op mode with all new bonus levels that can be played as a single-player or cooperatively which earns you more points and can place you higher on the scoreboards.

New Levels and New Challenges

The new levels add several new challenges based on the environment itself, and can be very tricky to navigate. New ‘land mines’ have been added and take away fuel whenever you run into one. There are new air shafts that will allow you to either fly upwards, or descend to a lower level, depending on if you are spinning with R2 or L2.

New Bad Guys

The newest bad guys you’ll have to face have been made smarter than the last ones, and can be a major nuisance when they pop out from hiding or just gang up on you.

New Obstacles and Platform Moves

The developers were able to create some unique designs that are collapsible, and you’ll have to figure out how to manipulate them in order to progress along. Having the bad guys annoy you at every turn adds even more fun.

Play Locally with a Friend

The newly added co-op mode allows you to play with a friend as long as you have a second controller. This definitely adds some replayability to the title, but it is slightly disappointing that you can’t play online with a friend. Hopefully that is something that can be added later, as it would really open up the game to a wider audience and create even more replayability.

The Hunt for the Stars Continues as well

Topatoi: Pillar of the Skies features 11 new trophies and is currently only available in Europe. The US release date hasn’t been announced, but you can be sure it won’t be too far off. The Pillar of Skies is an add-on and requires the first episode installed, but you can start Episode 2 without completing the Episode 1 levels first. It is recommend that you play The Great Tree Story first in order to get the necessary experience, learn the controls and the features of the GEMMA device.

There is an update for the original game, and the GEMMA seems more responsive to the controls with the updated game and double jumps work better.

Topatoi Episode 2: The Pillar of Skies is a great add-on that adds quite a bit of play time to a title that was a little short to start with. 8-10 hours of fun playtime should be expected for anyone with platforming experience. The add-on is definitely worth the low-price, even if you have to purchase Episode 1 first.
