Cryptic Studio’s MMORPG Already Has Over One Million Accounts Just Days After Release
February 4, 2010 – Cryptic Studios’ Star Trek Online has already topped one million registered accounts according to publisher Atari.
The massively-multiplayer game takes place in a time period after the currently released Star Trek films and allows players to command starships and battle in space, explore planets, take on quests and recruit others to their cause.
One million registered accounts is a strong indicator of a vibrant online community and it should only grow given Star Trek’s massive fan base and the recent release of the JJ Abrams helmed Star Trek film from last summer.
By comparison, World of Warcraft has more than 11 million current users six years after its release. While attracting new gamers is a noteworthy achievement, keeping them around by offering lots of playing options will be Cryptic’s next challenge.
Star Trek Online was released on Tuesday for the PC.

I hate the to say this, but maybe you should actually read the original source of the news instead of just copying what other people say or stop letting your editor make the headlines for your news stories. It says that 1 million have registered accounts and that means forum accounts. The game has indeed created a lot of interest, but what your headline suggests just isn’t true, since creating a forum account on the STO forums isn’t tied to buying anything.
It’s pretty much a lie. It’s 1 million registered forum accounts. Many of these are from Champions Online (their registry systems are shared) and beta accounts (they didn’t delete them after the game went live).
I would say the amount of people that actually bought STO is more like 300,000.
And to clarify – the game takes place well AFTER “Next Generation” / “DS9″ / “Voyager”. The current film has reverted back before all of the original series except “Enterprise”….
