Nintendo Wii Holds Large Lead on Amazon Over 360, PS3

January 2, 2010 – Amazon.com revealed their best-selling video game items of 2009. The list reveals that the Nintendo Wii had a dominant hold on the industry in 2009 and that the Xbox 360 and PS3 lagged far behind.

The list, which does not reveal actual sales numbers, but instead lists the best-selling video game related items on Amazon in 2009, revealed that 9 of the top ten items sold in the video game section of Amazon’s website were Wii-related. The top product of the year was the Nintendo Wii, followed by the Wii Remote Controller, the Wii Motion Plus, the Wii Nunchuck Controller, New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360, and Mario Kart with Wii Wheel.

The Nintendo Wii's popularity as a gaming platform helped it dominate Amazon's 2009 video game product charts.

The absolute dominance of the Nintendo Wii highlights the still enormous gap between Nintendo’s Wii system and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3. The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were designed to present the most advanced graphics, providing gamer’s with visceral, hugely ambitious games focusing largely on shooters, RPGs and action titles. Nintendo’s Wii chose to maintain simple graphical capabilities similar to that of the Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2. In addition, the Wii was marketed as a party system with titles like Wii Sports, Wii Fit and even New Super Mario Brothers catering to large groups picking up controllers and playing together. The focus on reaching a large demographic group has benefited the Wii enormously. It has brought in traditional gamer audiences as well as new audiences such as women and elderly customers with its ease of use and large variety of pick-up and play titles.

2009 saw the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 gain ground on the Nintendo Wii. However, Amazon’s list of the top video game products shows that the gap is still enormous.

2010 will see a large glut of AAA titles released in the first few months of the year for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Games such as Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bioshock 2, Bayonetta, Final Fantasy XIII, Alan Wake and Dante’s Inferno are expected to increase console sales and garner huge sales numbers on their own, but it is difficult to estimate whether they will make any dent in the Wii’s continued run of dominance over the market.
