Terminal Gamer’s Sports Game of the Year Is…

NHL 10

EA Sports did a truly stunning job at developing quality sports titles this year. NHL 10, FIFA 10, NCAA Football 10, Madden NFL 10 and NBA Live 10 all saw massive improvements in gameplay. FIFA 10 was undoubtedly better than Pro Evolution Soccer, the first time in ages that anyone could recall that happening. Madden NFL 10 and NCAA Football 10 finally felt like they had been made specifically for the 360 and PS3, and NBA Live 10 made incredible leaps to close in on NBA 2K10 as the best NBA game. But no sports game felt more accurate to the actual game it simulated that NHL 10.

NHL 10 introduced board play. Players realistically fought against the boards for control of the puck. After the whistle, players jostled amongst each other and occasionally would start fights. With unprecedented control, you can now pass the puck in any direction, including ahead of a player, anticipating his movements. Goals can range from spectacular to ugly, but they never feel cheap, and players honestly look like their real-life counterparts. Featuring tons of gameplay modes and the Centennial Montreal Canadiens team, NHL 10 didn’t just provide a great hockey-playing experience, it provided a great gameplay package that featured stunning single player action, fantastic multiplayer, and tons of replayability. NHL 10 wasn’t just a great sports game, it was a great game across the board.

Runners up: FIFA 10, Wii Sports Resort, MLB 09: The Show
