Today, Zenimax Media announced that they had picked up the rights to publish id Software’s RAGE.

RAGE will feature id’s new id Tech 5 graphics engine and was announced in 2007 at Quakecon. Since then, little has been revealed about the game, which is id’s first new intellectual property in years. The game will take in the near future, after the world has been struck by an asteroid. Heavily based upon films such as Mad Max, RAGE will feature a mixture of action and car racing sequences.

According to id’s John Carmack, RAGE, uncompressed, is nearly one terabyte in size and will have to be shipped on two or three DVDs for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. The Playstation 3 version will ship on one Blu Ray disc.

RAGE was previously held by Electronic Arts, who will no longer be involved in the sales and marketing of RAGE.

Bethesda Softworks is best known for their work on The Elder Scrolls series, including Morrowind and Oblivion, as well as for Fallout 3. The Rockville, Maryland based company is also currently developing Brink and will be publishing Fallout: New Vegas, a purported sequel to Fallout 3.

There is no known release date for RAGE, which will be arriving on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC platforms.

    The PS3 is a beast. Strongest console by far.

    I don’t know if I can make room for RAGE though. The PS3 lineup is just too full with better games. I could plug my 360 back in, but I get a sinking feeling every time I hit the power button. The old “what if my xbox fails like the majority of xboxes”. Oh well, it isn’t like there are any games worth playing on the 360 these days. I might as well put it away with my gamecube and bring my Dreamcast back out.

    Man, I can not WAIT for this game. 1st day buy on PS3 for me. The first half of 2010 is pretty crowded, especially on PS3, but luckily, the 2nd hald is pretty wide open for me. All I see coming out 2nd half so far that I’m buying for sure is Mortal Kombat 9 and Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2. And RAGE won’t be out until the Fall the earliest. And even if it wasn’t coming out in a fairly wide open period for me, I’d MAKE room for RAGE. DOOM3 like FPS action with Motorstorm like racing with weapons?! Yea….gimme, gimme, gimme!! DAY 1!!!

    3 DVD’s!!!!!!!!!!! screw that!!! im getting the PS3 version

    Didn’t they have to take out some content because of the 360? It’d take too much room and it’d cost too much to have more than three DVDs so they cut it down for all versions… That’s real bullshit.

    @HowItIs
    I’m not really sure if you should actually even plan on buying Rage on the PS3. Carmack recently said that they are struggling with the development on this console, mainly because of the inferior memory and graphic card architecture. They are still trying to reach 20-30fps, while the X360 already runs smoothly on 60fps.
