Need For Speed Shift Is Fast Paced, Exciting, Realistic Racing Action That Can Compete With Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo

Need For Speed Shift is the latest game in EA’s long-running racing franchise. As a youngster, I remember getting behind the wheel of a Lamborghini and roaring along winding mountain roads while avoiding cops playing Need For Speed: High Stakes. I remember the distinct thrill of speeding at 200 miles per hour over high mountain passes and past waiting cops who began tearing after me. It was a thrill.

Then, Need For Speed became something else. It became generic. The formula from previous titles in the franchise was repeated over and over. The racing was distinctly arcade-like. The graphics improved, the AI improved, but the game itself was basically a redressed version of it’s former self. You raced illegally around cities and on roads. Cops chased you. You had an easy time at it and there was not really any technical difficulty to the challenges the game provided.

Need For Speed: Shift, the 15th installment in the Need For Speed franchise is a much-needed improvement to Need For Speed’s formula. It is action-packed, fun, and decidedly not easy. It also caters to all levels of drivers. It is a great game.

On the PlayStation store you have been able to find a wide variety of games for your PS3. The majority of the smaller titles have been shooter based and not very innovating. Now ‘topatoi™: The Great Tree Story’ has arrived and it is a welcome change to what seems like a shooter based gaming world. This is the premiere episode with promises of many more episodes to come.

Gameplay

The story begins with Raph, his girlfriend, and the ‘Professor’ flying along in their blimp like vehicle. Raph apparently isn’t the smartest person on the craft, he did forget their map, but the Professor gave him the task of engaging the rocket boosters anyway. ” That’s the lever on the left? No? Oops! My bad.”

Their ship crashes into a strange and unexplored new world. The world is a tree, and a huge tree at that. Raph’s girlfriend decides to go against common sense (and the Professor’s instructions) and leaves the ship on foot. She is quickly grabbed up by a huge blackbird, the villains name is Blackwing, and is carried away. What story is complete without a damsel in distress?

The Professor, in his infinite wisdom, has created a neat little craft that will help Raph on his journey to not only find his girlfriend, but also find parts to fix their broken ship. continue reading…

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Takes Gaming Beyond the Next Generation

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune introduced us to a fortune hunter by the name of Nathan Drake. He had a knack for getting into, and shooting out of, tight spots. The storytelling within the game created an overall cinematic experience that really made you feel as much a movie goer as it did a gamer. The graphics were great and the game play was even better. The characters were well developed and the story itself was top notch.

Fast forward just over two years from the release of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and we now have the much anticipated sequel to the previous ‘PS3 Game of the Year‘ recipient.

Gameplay

The story begins with Nate waking up on a train, visibly disoriented, and unsure of his surroundings. He is wounded and bloody.  The view out the window is breathtaking, but he only has a few seconds to admire it, as something goes flying past his head. continue reading…

Wolfenstein Is A Fun, Addictive Title That Sports Excellent Single Player Shooter/Horror Action

When I began playing Wolfenstein I felt a bit sleepy. I was tired of Nazis at this point. After all, over the past decade it feels as though nine out of every ten shooters stuck it to the Nazis. Hearing the coarse German accents hovering in the air and seeing their swastikas everywhere reminded me that I was once again stuck in World War II Europe. Frankly, the beginning lulled me into believing that Wolfenstein would be a run of the mill, adequate shooter. I did not expect it to suck me in as it did. I didn’t expect to enjoy taking on Nazis again. But the truth is that Wolfenstein succeeds because it is different from other World War II shooters. It’s the Indiana Jones of World War II shooters – fantastical and over the top.

And it is a hell of a lot of fun.
